The Glendale Vaqueros continue to roll at home improving to seven straight wins to start the year after a doubleheader sweep of Victor Valley 9-7 in seven innings in the first game and 11-3 in a five-inning, eight-run ruled contest to move their record to 9-1 joining NoCal's Cosumnes River and Hartnell for the most wins in state.
Azusena Lopez finished the doubleheader with seven hits in eight at bats, to go with six runs driven in, four runs scored, homered once and tripled twice. Lopez wrapped up with week going 13-of-20 in five games played. This is the second time that Lopez has had 10 RBIs in a single week, she last did so in the opening weekend of the season at the 21st annual Dave “Hawk” Wilder Tournament. Lopez currently leads the 3C2A in RBIs with 22.
Catarina Anzalone had great plate discipline by drawing five walks and scoring five times. Anzalone finished the week with coming across home ten times and also had eight hits and reached base six times via a walk.
It was the ‘Mia’ show in the second game as the trio of Jurado, Allinson and Sanchez combined to drive home six of the 11 runs. Jurado crushed her first career homer in the third inning to lead off a five-run outburst, later in the same inning - Allinson doubled home pinch hitter Valerie Juarez and catcher Grace FitzRandolph. Former WSC all conference selection Arlene Islas was 2-for-3 at the plate for Glendale.
In the circle, Sanchez and Annaliese Ruiz each got the start going four strong innings to secure the victory on single earned runs apiece. Sanchez went 18 and a half innings over the week striking out 24 batters with wins over host Oxnard on Tuesday and VVC in the second game. Ruiz picked up her third victory of the season in the first game against VVC with Jazmin Jaquez getting the three-inning save.
Glendale, the 3C2A leader in runs scored with 103, will next be in action against their Western State Conference North rival Allan Hancock College Bulldogs on Thursday, February 12th with first pitch slated for 1pm in the first game of the doubleheader with the second game approximately 30 minutes after.
In other softball news, Zee’s former Roosevelt High of Eastvale teammate Priscilla “Persy” Llamas and No. 14 ranked Ole Miss won three of their first five games to open the season with two wins against 1-4 CSUN 13-1 on Friday and 10-1 on Saturday. Llamas was 10-for-18 for a .556 average to go with seven RBIs, five runs scored, doubled twice and homered once. Ruiz’s former St Genevieve High teammate Natalie Ascencio (LA Mission 2025) is currently a junior at NAIA program Doane and they are off to a 3-1 start. Ascencio is sporting a 2.10 ERA in the circle and has logged ten inning striking out five batters faced in two games. San Fernando Valley native Vivian Little (Polytechnic 2018 and LA Mission 2024) is currently a senior at NAIA and 21st ranked Hope International and they are off to a 6-2 start. Little is 11-for-22 in seven games played to go with six RBIs, five runs scored and four doubles at the plate and is sporting a 1.93 ERA in three appearances in the circle. The Eagles of Mission (2-7) are struggling to get quality wins as they were swept in a road doubleheader against 3C2A powerhouse Palomar by the scores of 9-1 and 11-3. Eagles will return back to their new home field at SIBL on Tuesday, February 10th to face-off against S.D. Mesa in a doubleheader that will begin at 12pm with the second game approximately 30 minutes after.
