Western State Conference Volleyball Crossover Night #1

The Los Angeles Mission College women’s volleyball team hosted a premier California Community College Association showdown against their Western State Conference (WSC) counterparts from the South in the 11th state ranked Santa Monica Corsairs on Wednesday night. A Season ago, LAMC and SMC finished in second place in their respective sides and unfortunately for the Eagles fell in a hard fought five set affair at home. Then freshman hitters in LAMC’s Tawnie Ohrt of John Burroughs and SMC’s Nicole Lankton of Redondo Union combined for 27 kills that night. Ohrt was second on the team in kills with 369 and Lankton finished with 207 overall. 

As for this season, the fifth ranked 🦅 got their revenge this time around against the Corsairs by the set scores of 25-23, 25-23 and 25-20 earning their sixth 3-set sweep of the season. The Eagles improve to 13 wins and no losses with all the decisions coming at the ‘Eagles Nest’ and will be on the road for the first time this season as they travel to nearby Santa Clarita to take on the College of the Canyons Cougars on Friday, September 19th with first serve slated for 6pm.

Santa Barbara City Vaqueros, ranked 7th overall in the state, won a four set contest tonight against the Canyons Cougars at their temporary home at the University of Santa Barbara. The Vaqueros improved to 9 wins and no losses.

La Pierce Brahmas, under the guidance of first year women’s coach Joe Arechiga, improved to 3-0 with their third straight sweep to begin the year against the West LA Wildcats. Arechiga is a former student athlete at LAPC and started his prep career playing at Tujunga based school Verdugo Hills under legendary coach Will “The Thrill” Reinhart.

The Glendale Vaqueros fell 3-1 on the road against the Allan Hancock Bulldogs. GCC was led on the offensive side of net, freshman hitters in Eva Portnaya finishing with 18 kills and eight digs and Abigail Yeoh finishing 15 digs, eight kills and three assists. South Dakota native and two sport athlete Raelee Lanphear paced the defense with 21 digs. Sophomore setter Shiho Uchida dished out 33 assists and had 11 digs to go along with a team high five service aces.

In the end, the WSC Northern Division opened its Crossover schedule by going a perfect 7-0 against their Southern Division opponents. No. 10 ranked, the Pasadena City Lancers (8-3 overall) won 3-0 against the host Chaffey Panthers by the set scores of 25-9, 25-10 and 25-6.
